Avoiding cloud data security risks through SLAs
February 14, 2012

Many companies today are hesitant to implement cloud computing because of the security concerns associated with outsourcing sensitive information. However, decision-makers should understand that the majority of these issues can be tackled if a business deploys the technology correctly, according to a CSO report.

The first thing that decision-makers must do is consider their risk tolerance level and design a model around how vulnerable they will feel in the cloud. The cloud has multiple environments, including completely hosting information in a public domain, keeping sensitive information on-site with private models or combining the two into one hybrid architecture, the news source reported.

Cloud data security concerns need to be addressed in the service-level agreement to ensure that the company remains compliant with industry standards. The SLA should also cover which organization, the provider or the user, has ownership over the hosted information in the event of a disaster, CSO noted.

Decision-makers may also consider discussing digital security within the SLA to keep information safe. Encryption is of the utmost importance, according to a Security Week report, and should not be left out of the cloud environment.
