Study: Nearly half of users disregard SharePoint security practices
January 19, 2012

A recent survey by Cyptzone revealed that many Microsoft SharePoint users blatantly disregard security protocols by removing documents in order to help them perform tasks quicker. In fact, roughly 34 percent of respondents said they rarely think about SharePoint security implications, while an additional 13 percent believe that protecting data is simply not their responsibility.

"Organizations recognize that today's workforce needs to be able to collaborate effectively, but if this new found access to data is introducing lax security practices then the danger could quickly outweigh the benefits," said Cryptzone data loss prevention expert Daniel Nilsson. "While some might consider it admirable that their employees are so dedicated to getting the job done, the fact remains that they're circumventing procedures and security put in place for good reason."

The report found nearly half of SharePoint users copy sensitive or confidential documents from the service. This is to either help them work from home or to share them with third parties that don't have access to SharePoint.

According to the DataLoss Database, roughly one-third of all data breaches are caused by insiders. To prevent these incidents, administrators should stress the importance of practicing strong data loss prevention techniques and not sharing personal information.
