Security Enablement

Some messages require higher levels of assurance, including confidentiality, integrity, and non-repudiation. This requires the use of encryption and digital signature technology, such as public key infrastructure (PKI) or Microsoft Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS). However, these technologies are difficult to enforce at the client level.

Message Classification simplifies PKI and AD RMS by automatically protecting email based on the user's classification selection. For the user, Message Classification makes it as simple as selecting a label. Message Classification then applies the appropriate protection mechanism automatically in the background, such as:

  • S/MIME encryption to provide message confidentiality.
  • S/MIME signing to provide message integrity and non-repudiation.
  • AD RMS templates to provide digital rights management, such as control over message copying, forwarding, and printing.

Users do not need to understand PKI or AD RMS; they simply select a label, and the appropriate protection is applied transparently. In the background, Message Classification triggers the appropriate AD RMS template or S/MIME protection. No further user interaction is required.

This feature is completely customizable by the administrator. Organizations can decide exactly which classification labels will trigger the extra level of protection.
