Classification – It’s Not Just for Government Anymore

For the most part, when people think about the need for classifying and protecting documents and information, their minds go to government departments and military organizations where there are strict requirements for classifying information which need to be followed and regulations which need to be met. While this is certainly the case, more and more private sector organizations are finding the need to classify and protect information. I’m sure you can think of a time or two in the past couple of years when information has leaked out of an organization – either inadvertently or not – and the consequences have been devastating.

Not so long ago, Dow Corning identified a need in their organization for employees to classify information in emails and documents in order to keep employees from inadvertently leaking out sensitive information. Dow Corning was in the process of implementing a global Intellectual Property (IP) protection program, and classifying information was a major part of this initiative. They started looking for an enterprise-wide solution that was easy to get up and running, was simple for their 10,000 employees to start using right away, and involved a minimal total cost of ownership.

After the successful global deployment of the Titus Labs solutions, Dow Corning found that it integrated seamlessly into their employee’s existing workflow when sending an email, and helped ensure that each employee understood how information should be handled. The need for upfront training for staff was minimal (in many cases, they found that simply sending an email letting users know the software was installed and available was enough), and the solutions were painless to install and get up and running as they took advantage of their existing Microsoft Office and Exchange environment.

Every email and document at Dow Corning are now consistently labeled based on corporate policy and are now protected. Corporate labeling policy can now be updated across the enterprise and rolled out to all employees overnight. With policies front and centre, emails and documents are now protected, and all employees are well versed in the proper handling of sensitive information.
